24 August 2020 – Work at Lifelong Relationships

Weekly YES Quote!

“I would rather walk with a friend in the dark than alone in the light.”

Helen Keller

Weekly Reflection

This past week was the first full week I’ve been able to spend in my new spot, and I’ve been loving it!

The quote from two week’s ago in the yes post, Take the Plunge, still stands out in my mind: “Just remember, once you’re over the hill you begin to pick up speed.”

Well… here I am picking up speed!

Although I’m not fully unpacked nor have I finished carting over items I may or may not choose to hold onto, I am making serious progress towards completion: 90% of the items in my new spot have a home, items that are missing (new couch is en route!) have a designated space, and wall decorations are slowly going up!

I highly recommend checking out last week’s post regarding Cleansing Your Space if you haven’t already.

And the best part about it is that I’ve not had to go through this change alone.

My best friend Nick W. not only helped me find the spot, but he’s been monumental in moving assistance and critical purchases (I can’t imagine my life without you).

My amazing friends Ethan and Nick M. spent a full weekend helping me repaint furniture and assist / have been assisting with moving activities (I’m always good for pizza and beer, boys).

My ride or die Nikki has helped to get me out of the apartment so that I can reset my intentions and come back refreshed to conquer more (she might even be moving into the same complex… fingers crossed!).

My loving parents have ensured my mental and financial health are intact (I owe you so much towards my success as a person and professional. Thank you!).

The support system I have is unreal, and I can’t thank these people and others not mentioned above enough.

Which brings us to this week’s yes post: although change may be in your foresight, you never need to go it alone nor should you.

I could’ve put my head down and with a heavy heart decided that I was just going to barrel into this next chapter alone, but what fun would that be?

Instead I reached out to friends, family, and loved ones to assist me with all aspects of this process.

I don’t need to walk through life alone even as I forge my path as an independent person.

And neither should you.

We should always remember and cherish those who have helped us get to where we are.

Weekly Challenge

This weekend I packed a bag and headed to North County San Diego to stay with my old roomy Nick.

We haven’t had much Nick & Aly time since we stopped living together back in early August and that simply wasn’t okay with us.

He assisted me with some more moving activities (he helped me purchase a TV… tip for you readers: I’m not a savvy TV person), and we watched countless episodes of Frasier (so far we’ve crushed FriendsWill & Grace, and Cheers – sitcoms are our jam).

I’m even writing this week’s yes post to you from the island counter in his kitchen!

The point of sharing more information about my weekend with you is this:

I’ve been going it solo for a while now, but I’ve not forgotten who my people are, and more importantly I’ve not forgotten to show them what they mean to me.

Has anyone come to mind for you as you’ve read this post? Someone you may have lost contact with as you and they have grown separate?

We will grow apart if we don’t put in the effort of maintaining the relationship.

Every relationship, no matter how easy the relationship may seem, requires work if you intend on the relationship lasting.

I firmly believe that your friendships, work relationships, family relationships, and maybe most importantly romantic relationships all require work in order to be healthy, happy, and steadfast.

This week I challenge you to reach out to one of your people who you may have lost contact with, drifted apart from, grown separate of… Touch in with them, connect with them, and find out how they’re doing and share with them how you’re doing.

Sometimes it’s okay if relationships fade – for not every relationship is permanent and that’s okay! Some relationships are stepping stones towards our own betterment and weren’t meant to last.

But some relationships, no matter how dormant they may have become, are meant to last, and all it takes is a little work from you to bring that relationship back to the present.

So pick up the phone or send the text, tweet, Facebook message, DM, [insert social media reference for contact here] and contact that person or persons who’ve come to mind this week.

I’m sure they’d love to hear from you as much as you’d love to hear from them.

Just as this week’s quote by Helen Keller says,

“I would rather walk with a friend in the dark than alone in the light.”

Reminder to Just Say Yes!

As always, say yes to experiences that present themselves to you! Life is full of fun and wonder – don’t be stuck at home wondering what life could be like, should be like, would be like… drop that nonsense! Get out there, say yes, and never look back!

We each have a unique journey, and I would love to share in yours.

17 August 2020 – Cleanse Your Space

Weekly YES Quote!

“The space in which we live should be for the person we are becoming now, not for the person we were in the past.”

Weekly Reflection

I feel good. I feel really really good.

This weekend I moved the majority of my belongings into my new home. I’d say I’m right around 80/20 where 80% of my possessions are at the new spot while 20% are lingering behind at the old spot.

As I endlessly pack, transfer packages, then unpack (seems like it’ll never end…) I keep looking around thinking, do I need the other 20?

We’re so prone to collecting things… and I can say without a doubt that I’m guilty of such mannerisms.

I’m not saying it’s wrong, wasteful, or irresponsible to collect. I enjoy the memories that I can associate with items I’ve collected from trips around the world, friends, family members, a random garage sale… It’s nice to have things that hold memories.

But it’s also nice to let things go when you move.

It’s cleansing to purge and clear the slate again for the new start you’re beginning.

It’s helpful to the soul to let some things go while you forge your new path.

So while some items (like my ridiculous collection of pint glasses) will make the journey over to my new pad, some items will go to new homes.

I can appreciate the items for the purposes they once served for me, and I can appreciate the new purpose they’ll serve for someone else.

Weekly Challenge

When was the last time you cleared out items from your closet, pantry, car, office, vacation home, or [insert place you frequently seem to store clutter]?

We tend to clutter places we use and visit often, and we rarely take the time to cleanse those spaces to keep them fresh for us.

I need to remind myself of this as I settle into my new home.

I’m going to be here almost every day using this space. I need to consider what possessions I need or have outgrown regularly so that I keep the space fresh.

We owe it to ourselves to have a place that always brings us clarity, peace, and comfort.

And we cannot have that marvelously fulfilling space if we clog it with clutter.

I challenge you to take this week to survey your regular areas and take action to clear out items that are no longer of use to you.

When you look into your closet to get dressed this morning, survey what clothes you haven’t worn in a year or more. Maybe you don’t need those clothes anymore.

When you look into your pantry to prep for your meal, survey what food items you never pick up when you’re inspired to make food or what food items are quickly approaching their expiration date.

When you hop into your car this morning to make your regular commute or to run an errand, survey what out of date papers you have in your glove box or what unnecessary trinkets you have piling up in your center console.

When you sit down at your desk to get cranking away at the office survey what items are strewn about on your desktop or within the drawers.

When you get to your vacation home to have a relaxing, re-centering holiday survey what items you brought from your main home thinking that they would be of use but have instead converted your vacation home into a storage for old stuff.

Think about what you’re not using, won’t use, or have never used when you’re in your regular spaces this week and take action to give them a new life where they might be used.

Clear your space.

We all need a good cleanse from time to time.

Reminder to Just Say Yes!

10 August 2020 – Take the Plunge

Weekly YES Quote!

Weekly Reflection

In last week’s post I reflected on two weeks of personal hardship (read the post here: 3 August 2020 – Manage the Stress).

And while I did manage the stress this past week, I still feel very emotional towards the changes that I’ve begun to embrace, and well… ultimately the changes are right around the corner whether or not I’m ready or willing to dive headfirst into whatever newness is waiting for me.

The above thought brings me to this week’s yes post: “take the plunge.”

For what else can I do?

I guess I could sit around and mope, feel sorry for myself, and cry until my tear ducts plugged and my eyes run out of fluid.

Or I could jump around jovially, tell myself everything is going to be absolutely spectacular, and do ten burpies in a row because why the heck not!

But truly… knowing me and who I am… I’ll take the plunge into this next chapter using a combination of the two while focusing on creating a balance that satisfies and soothes my soul.

For if I was only depressingly sad or only blissfully happy I wouldn’t truly be taking the plunge I want and need for myself.

We’re each looking for our way in this life.

And if we let these seemingly monumental occurrences blockade our paths and don’t permit ourselves room for growth and change, then we’re doing ourselves a disservice in this life.

How you take the plunge is entirely up to you.

What plunge you take is also entirely up to you.

You are the captain, first mate, and crew on your life journey. You have all the power and resources you need in order to be successful.

But you have to take the plunge no matter how difficult or impossible it may seem.

I’m not ready to live without Nick. I’m simply not. But I won’t let the fact that he’s not in the other room across the hall stop me from living the life I was meant to lead.

My heart is still sad, heavy, but strong.

Weekly Challenge

What’s been nagging at you lately?

We’ve all been faced with the requirement to change our daily lives due to the pandemic we’re all still dealing with and will always continue to deal with.

Maybe that’s your biggest hurtle at the moment.

Or, perhaps, you’ve encountered a new obstacle in your path as I have that’s preventing you from achieving your desired happiness.

I challenge you this week to identify what in your life is making you unhappy.

I challenge you this week to identify what changes have occurred that have otherwise upset your comfortable lifestyle.

I challenge you this week to identify what longtime issues you’ve ignored, backburnered, and otherwise chosen not to face headfirst to eliminate their nuisance.

I challenge you this week to open yourself up to the possibilities you have in front of you because of the unhappiness, discomforts, and nuisances.

Take the plunge! Take on your life!

Take this as an opportunity to grow and get better.

Take this as an opportunity to do more with the talents you possess.

Take this opportunity solely for you.

You are the number one person in your life. You are the center of your universe.

If you’re unhappy, uncomfortable, or holding back… you’re do you a disservice more than anything else.

So take the plunge this week!

I’ll be there taking the plunge with you hand in hand.

Reminder to Just Say Yes!

As always, say yes to experiences that present themselves to you! Life is full of fun and wonder – don’t be stuck at home wondering what life could be like, should be like, would be like… drop that nonsense! Get out there, say yes, and never look back!

3 August 2020 – Manage the Stress

Weekly YES Quote!

“It takes time for nature to change things into what they’re becoming. It takes time for things to develop. Be patient with yourself and life. Trust the process of growth.”

Melody Beattie, Journey to the Heart: Daily Meditations on the Path to Freeing Your Soul

(Journey to the Heart is an affiliate link)

Weekly Reflection

My heart is sad.

My heart is heavy.

My heart is strong.

These last two weeks haven’t been the best for me: my close friend who I’d been in direct contact with contracted the novel coronavirus, and I thought I may be infected wherein I may have infected my CEO, General Manager, and basically the entire staff at my office; and my best friend, Nick, and I decided to separate once our lease ends meaning the real life Will & Grace won’t be living together any longer.

These two intense and personal situations have distracted me from writing the weekly Monday YES post in addition to living my full and happy life.

I let the stress overwhelm me.

I forgot to look at the glass half full or even at the glass at all.

I know I can get through both of these happenings.

I am a strong, capable woman who can and will achieve whatever I set my mind to.

And that’s exactly what I did: I took action when I felt extremely helpless, overwhelmed, and sad.

I researched COVID-19 rapid testing facilities, booked an appointment, got tested… results: negative.

Massive sigh of relief.

I hugged Nick, cried with Nick, and started the apartment search. I not only found a nice place within my budget and location preferences, but Nick went with me to look at it. So although it won’t be his and mine, in a way the new spot will have a little sparkle of Nick in it.

Cue more tears, but at least these tears are of happiness.

Change is hard. Life is hard.

No one ever said that life would be easy.

And it’s good to feel – it’s good to acknowledge what stresses us out, but it’s not good to let the stress win us over so that we’re unable to function.

Weekly Challenge

Is there something or some things that have been distracting you?

We all have stressors and things that trigger an emotional response that causes a detriment to our smiles.

It’s natural to hit obstacles that seem like massive boulders we’ll never be able to climb over and move past.

And when I say, “move past,” I’m talking about arms pumping, legs kicking, and energy bursting from your miraculous body. I’m talking about striding with pride, dignity, and joy as you move past that obstacle!

If anything has been ailing you recently please, challenge yourself to take on the challenge and manage the stress.

Do not let the stress manage you.

For you are brave, bold, strong, and capable. You can and will overcome anything you set your mind to.

Reminder to Just Say Yes!

As always, say yes to experiences that present themselves to you! Life is full of fun and wonder – don’t be stuck at home wondering what life could be like, should be like, would be like… drop that nonsense! Get out there, say yes, and never look back!

This book is among my favorites – In my not morning person ways, I wake up every morning, grab my tea/coffee depending on my mood and desired caffeine intake, and read the day’s passage.

I’d love it if you shared some of the ways this week’s quote has made you feel, and what stressors you’ve been faced with, how you plan to overcome them, or simply how you have overcome major stressors in the past.

We each have a unique journey, and I would love to share in yours.

13 July 2020 – Overcome Your Limits

Weekly YES Quote!

“If you’re serious about changing your life, you’ll find a way. If you’re not, you’ll find an excuse.”

Jen Sincero, You Are a Badass: How to Stop Doubting Your Greatness and Start Living an Awesome Life

Weekly Reflection

Getting back from Colorado was rough… not only did we have to drive 13+ hours in a car, but I had to reset my mind and rejoin the regular work force the following day.

I’d just spent so much time doing me: yoga on the deck overlooking the mountains, hiking through the trees while taking in the fresh air, not giving a [bleep] in order to permit myself to be the center of my universe. The thought alone of having to give these moments up to wake to an alarm, put on fresh clothes, get my face ready for action, hop in my car, burn fuel on the freeway, set my computer items down at my work station, and begin to converse with others about what happened during my absence, return, and subsequent day, was an exhausting thought.

Fortunately, though the last paragraph makes it appear that I’m casting mad hate, I love my job and more so I love my coworkers.

So while I was lamenting the drive I was looking forward to some things that were enticing about returning to the office.

Two days at work… hello Friday afternoon… hello burnout.

I was so tired come the end of Friday.

Whenever you leave for vacation you know you have a lot to deal with upon your return. No complaints here… again, I love my job and it’s good to be employed in 2020… but man oh man two days in the office when I’d had 7 days to decompress in the mountains… needless to say it was a lot.

Friday rolled around and I took advantage of the weekend.

Needing to continue my streak of physical excellence I opted for a 60 minute advanced session of upper body strength using the Down Dog Yoga app.

I yoga on the regular, I mediate on the regular, I center on the regular… I also 60 minute advanced [fill in the blank] yoga on the regular, but something about the upper body strength session I participated in was beyond my abilities.

About 45 minutes in I was not only dripping sweat all over my mat and sucking wind heavily (goodbye ujjayi breath), but I was deeply wondering can I see this?

I kept pushing… crow, cobra, up dog, downward facing dog, three legged dog, lizard,

Got it! Okay… 35 minutes.. I can keep this up…

A couple more rounds then we took an easy seat.

Woo! I thought. Finally we’re headed for savasana.

Ha! Not. The. Case.

We started at lolasana (seated position putting weight in the hands while raising the hips), and then we worked our way into elephant trunk pose. r

Again, got it!

When my arms and wrists began to think hahaha we done yet? we went into eight angles pose.

My mind literally went, the [bleep]??!! No joke… fell on my face.

Struggled to maybe accomplish the pose and just when I was halfheartedly successfully we maneuvered into koundiyanasana ii… if you don’t know the pose please Google it.

I can do koundiyanasana ii (no bragging I swear) from lizard, but from whatever-pretzel-question-mark-just-open-mouth-gape… you get it. I simply could not.

Now that’s not to say that I will never be able to bust out this entire yoga routine from start to finish! I’m way too competitive and strong-willed to let this instance keep me from pushing myself to the next level.

I have found my limit and I aim to overcome it.

I understood during today’s practice that I wasn’t able to get through this practice in one swift go: I need to practice more in order to get better, stronger, and more capable of these moves in order to perform the routine from start to finish.

Weekly Challenge

Think on what’s been keeping you from advancing.

Is it something related to work, exercise, or self-esteem? Is it related to something else that affects your deepest desires and wants for you? Have you come to a plateau that you seem to be unable to overcome?

The fact that you’ve found them is beautiful in and of itself.

If you hadn’t found these obstacles in your path you wouldn’t be trying to further and better yourself.

You cannot simply meander through life – through some super hard [bleep] – if you don’t come upon an obstacle or million-and-a-half. It’s simply not feasible.

I found my limit today: my obstacle.

I’ve been trying to further my yoga practice, and I will gladly admit that I was feeling pretty boss until the practice today. I was crushing the advanced moves! I was feeling like an unconquerable being! Then… well, if you read the reflection above, I got my boss feelings handed to me on a silver platter.

I’m grateful for this.

If I wasn’t being challenged, if I wasn’t able to find my obstacles to overcome to further my practice, I would simply stop, saunter, and potentially pout that the world was just all too easy (which the world is definitely not).

I will overcome this limit this week or month or months or year or years… whatever it takes.

This week I challenge you to find your limit, and I further challenge you to overcome it.

Yes, the word limit is a bit disheartening since its literal definition is a point or level beyond which something does not or may not extend or pass… but is that what’s stopping you? Do you truly believe you cannot overcome that limit – that obstacle – that you’re facing that will bring you to the next level?

NO!

Don’t let your life be stopped short due to your limits.

Let your life flourish as you acknowledge and overcome your limits.

I’m here, trying to maintain my ujjayi breath, as I push past my own limits.

Find your limits, acknowledge them, and overcome them this week.

Reminder to Just Say Yes!

As always, say yes to experiences that present themselves to you! Life is full of fun and wonder – don’t be stuck at home wondering what life could be like, should be like, would be like… drop that nonsense! Get out there, say yes, and never look back!
